About Dr. Duffy

Michael Duffy, MD is a board-certified family medicine physician who has spent his career caring for patients across Maine. After years in traditional practice — where insurance paperwork and 10-minute appointment slots too often came between doctor and patient — he founded Michael Duffy MD to practice medicine the way he believes it should be practiced: personally, promptly, and without the middleman.

At Michael Duffy MD, you see the same doctor every time — a physician who knows your history, answers your messages himself, and has the time to actually listen.

No enrollment fee — joining costs nothing beyond your first month. Employer and family plans available — just ask. Membership can be cancelled with 30 days' notice.

Important message for Medicare beneficiaries

For Medicare beneficiaries: I am currently awaiting Medicare's confirmation of my opt-out status, and I cannot enroll Medicare beneficiaries until that confirmation arrives. In the meantime, interested Medicare beneficiaries are welcome to reserve a spot at no charge. I will contact you in the order received with an invitation to join once that confirmation is in hand.

Frequently asked questions

Do you take insurance?

No — and that's deliberate. By working directly for you instead of an insurance company, the practice can stay small, appointments can be longer, and pricing stays simple and transparent. We provide a receipt you may submit to your insurer, though reimbursement varies by plan.

Should I keep my health insurance?

Yes, most members keep a health plan for hospitalizations, specialists, surgery, and emergencies. Direct primary care covers your day-to-day and preventive care — the care you use most.

What does the membership not cover?

Hospital and emergency care, specialist visits, imaging, and prescription medications filled at a pharmacy. Lab work is available through the practice at wholesale client-bill prices, which are often far below standard charges.

How quickly can I be seen?

Members are offered same- or next-business-day appointments, and Dr. Duffy answers member messages directly — usually the same day.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Yes, in most cases. Since January 1, 2026, membership fees for a qualifying direct primary care arrangement can be paid tax-free from an HSA. FSA rules vary by plan, so check with your plan administrator or tax advisor for your situation.

How do I join?
